By Mercury News – Fremont finally has its first Vitality Bowls.
The “superfood” cafe whose menu is built on the antioxidant-rich acai berry opens its doors today on Paseo Padre Parkway for takeout and delivery. It’s the 38th location in California for the company founded in 2011 in San Ramon by Tara and Roy Gilad, parents who were inspired to create a restaurant haven for those, like their daughter, who suffer from food allergies.
The menu features fruit-based bowls (the Warrior Bowl and the Dragon Bowl are among the most popular), smoothies, panini, salads and soup. All are made in non-cross-contamination kitchens, and no artificial preservatives or added sweeteners are used.
Vi Pham and Scott Bui, the owners of this Vitality Bowls in the Gateway Plaza near Raley’s, are both health-care professionals. They say they plan to open additional locations in the region.

By Community Impact – Vitality Bowls in Friendswood donated over 150 smoothies to health care workers to thank them for their work during COVID-19. Once it safe for them to visit, they plan on donating food to those in nursing homes as well.
“We want to let them know that they are not left out. People do care,” owner Jackie Thomas said.
Thomas and her husband, Jimmy, are both owners at Vitality Bowls and have a son-in-law in the medical field. Because of this, the owners were even more attuned to the struggle medical workers face right now, Thomas said. The business also started giving discounts or free items to medical workers who would show up at the business, Thomas said, and the medical workers were always grateful. So when the corporation asked if anyone had ideas for how to help during COVID-19, it was an easy decision, Thomas said.
“We did the same thing after [Hurricane] Harvey. We went to the shelters where people were gathered and brought smoothies and small acai bowls,” Thomas said.
The business offered the same things to health care workers during its donations drive in April, along with an immunity boost, or a shot of lemon ginger and cayenne pepper. The business started the drive after the stay-at-home order was placed.
“Our business dropped 75%. We had people working at our store, and we started using that time to give back,” Thomas said.
Vitality Bowls, located at 1520 Bay Area Blvd., Ste. 115, Friendswood, primarily sells smoothies, smoothie bowls and other healthy items. Thomas said she hopes customers continue to support the business and healthy eating on the other side of the pandemic as well.
“We want the community to know that we are a health-conscious food provider. We want people to boost their immune systems and keep themselves at a level where healthy eating is a priority in people’s lives,” Thomas said.

Vitality Bowls in Dublin is donating a smoothie to a first responder for every smoothie purchased amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The smoothie and açaí bowl chain has served essential workers across the county, from the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose to the Windermere Police Department in Florida.
Gabi Lazar, owner of the Dublin store, said in an email that this July will mark the store’s fifth anniversary. She said she’s grateful to be part of the community and have an opportunity to give back.
“I am very lucky to have a strong team that working very hard to keep our buisness operating while I balance homeschooling,” she wrote. “We are donating smoothies to show support to all those hard workers out there helping to keep our community safe.”
BY Franchising.com – In the future, I believe we’ll be more adaptable to different pickup and delivery methods. When we emerge in the end, we need to use the lessons learned from this crisis to make us stronger as a system and as individuals. The challenges we are facing force us to be creative and quick to respond. We have seen great ideas come out of this — ideas that help give back to the community and bring us all closer together. Because we are deemed an essential business, we are able to provide our community with healthy food options and give back to medical professionals and first responders. I don’t think people will forget local small businesses that worked hard to provide healthy meals and other essential services during this challenging time.
The organic and fresh superfood ingredients Vitality Bowls offers are a breath of fresh air in a location of fatty and processed fast food, all walking distance from the Santa Rosa campus of Santa Rosa Junior College. However, the small portion sizes are not worth the bill you will pay for them.
The spinach salad is a mix of spinach, quinoa and strawberries with a balsamic finish. Salads should be a rainbow of colors from their ingredients and flavors, and the spinach salad is missing its rainbow. Like the salad, the panini lacks an abundance of its fresh ingredients. It is hard to consider this roasted turkey a panini when the bread appears to be only slightly grilled, ingredients taste sloppily put together and the entire sad presentation looks as thin as two pieces of cardboard stuck together. This soulless sandwich tastes like a basic grilled cheese with only hints of white turkey, roasted cherry tomatoes, baby spinach and a pinch of pesto. For being a superfood cafe, the salads and paninis are not as “super” as proclaimed.
The trend of fresh ingredients in all spectrums continues with the açaí bowls, which elevates the mood of the above mentioned menu items. Presentation of the açaí bowls is a significant upgrade, as the portion sizes are finally almost equivalent to their prices. Some of the bowls taste as simple as vanilla ice cream, while others, such as the tropical bowl, taste like a bite from heaven. It’s easy to distinguish the ingredients in the açaí blend even when some flavors overpower others. Toppings on açaí bowls are the strings that pull the entire bowl together and Vitality Bowls completes that, but at a minimum standard.
Vitality Bowls serves only organic toppings, a big plus compared to other locations that make açaí bowls, so chefs need to stop being shy and add a couple more spoonfuls of toppings to give the bowls an extra wow factor. The smoothies are similar to the açaí bowls in ingredients and texture, with a smooth and creamy feeling with every sip. The smoothies do not disappoint, especially on a 90-degree summer afternoon, when every sip is refreshing and leaves you wanting more.
Vitality Bowls is a superfood café for those who don’t run on a tight budget and want to enjoy healthy, all-natural spoonfuls of the cool açaí.
