As other restaurants struggle to stay open amidst coronavirus, Vitality Bowls just opened a new location in Fremont.
By Patch.com — If you’re looking for a summer treat, have you given Vitality Bowls a try? The business opened its doors in Fremont on June 19.
Vitality Bowls specializes in acai bowls, a blend of the antioxidant-rich acai berry, topped with a variety of superfoods. The owners are Vi Pham and Scott Bui.
“Our goal in opening Vitality Bowls is to make it a place the community can be proud of,” said Bui. “We were moved by the dedication and support we saw from local residents and healthcare professionals at Washington Hospital and Kaiser Permanente to keep Fremont safe during COVID-19.”
The new cafe is in Gateway Plaza near Raley’s Supermarket, at 39258 Paseo Padre Parkway.
Vitality Bowls was founded right here in the East Bay in 2011, in San Ramon. The Fremont location is the 38th Vitality Bowls cafe in California, and there’s close to 140 locations open or in development nationwide.
“We look forward to seeing Vi and Scott grow their business in Fremont and share the Vitality Bowls message with the community,” said Tara Gilad, founder and owner of Vitality Bowls. “As health and safety remain a top priority, community members will be able to enjoy a nutritious meal that they can feel good about, while also supporting a local business.”
Pham and Bui plan to open more Vitality Bowls in the area.
The Vitality Bowls menu features fresh juices, smoothies, soups, panini and salads in addition to the namesake bowls, all available while maintaining social distancing and safety practices, through mobile ordering, takeout, and curbside pickup.

Local residents Mike and Suzette Crews, previously working in healthcare management and consulting, had been looking for a new business to get into. Suzette “fell in love with the idea” of Vitality Bowls, said Mike.
Their Plano location serves up healthy bowls, smoothies, juices, paninis, soups and salads. The bowls begin with a base of açai blended with an option of graviola, acerola or pitaya, along with other fruits and veggies. Each bowl comes loaded with toppings such as granola, fresh fruit, honey, almonds, bee pollen and more, but diners can add or remove toppings as they like. Dining at Vitality Bowls offers the customer a guarantee that they’ll be consuming highly nutritious ingredients.
“Our goal in opening Vitality Bowls is to make it a place the community can be proud of,” said Mike. “We were moved by the dedication and support we have seen from local residents and healthcare professionals over the last few months, and we want to continue the gratitude and inspiring momentum as we open our doors to the community.”
The staff at Vitality Bowls is taking COVID-19 precautions seriously, and have implemented a plexiglass barrier at check-out, constant sanitization of tables and door handles, and a policy requiring all employees to wear face masks and gloves.

The hot-hot trend of restaurants specializing in healthy “bowls” has not dimmed and here’s a new one coming to Plano: Vitality Bowls, the superfood café specializing in açaí bowls, smoothies, fresh juices, salads and paninis, will open its first location in Plano, at the Polo Towne Crossing center at 2100 Dallas Pkwy., #132.
According to a release, the location is from Suzette and Mike Crews and it will open in April.
Vitality entered the DFW area in 2018, with a restaurant that opened in Preston Hollow Village. There are now two locations in Frisco and another coming soon to Southlake.
Açaí bowls are Vitality Bowls’ specialty. They feature a thick blend of the Amazon’s antioxidant-rich berry, topped with a variety of superfoods, including graviola, acerola, mangosteen, camu camu, spirulina, aronia, moringa, and maca.
Guests can choose from options such as the Green Bowl, with organic graviola, spirulina, and hemp seeds; the Dragon Bowl, with organic pitaya, coconut milk, and bananas; and the signature Vitality Bowl, with organic açaí, strawberries, and honey.
Vitality also serves juices, smoothies, soups, panini, salads, and organic kombucha on-tap.
The concept was founded in 2011 in San Ramon, California, by Roy and Tara Gilad, who discovered their daughter had severe food allergies and wanted to find alternatives.
There are currently more than 140 Vitality Bowls locations open or in development across the United States.
“Suzette and I have been very impressed by the healthy options offered by Vitality Bowls and we believe it can make an impact on our family and provide healthy and delicious alternatives to our Plano neighbors,” says Mike Crews in a statement.
He and Suzette plan to open more locations in the area in an effort to bring health-focused food to the community.

The “superfood” cafe whose menu is built on the antioxidant-rich acai berry opens its doors today on Paseo Padre Parkway for takeout and delivery. It’s the 38th location in California for the company founded in 2011 in San Ramon by Tara and Roy Gilad, parents who were inspired to create a restaurant haven for those, like their daughter, who suffer from food allergies.
The menu features fruit-based bowls (the Warrior Bowl and the Dragon Bowl are among the most popular), smoothies, panini, salads and soup. All are made in non-cross-contamination kitchens, and no artificial preservatives or added sweeteners are used.
Vi Pham and Scott Bui, the owners of this Vitality Bowls in the Gateway Plaza near Raley’s, are both health-care professionals. They say they plan to open additional locations in the region.
By Community Impact – Vitality Bowls in Friendswood donated over 150 smoothies to health care workers to thank them for their work during COVID-19. Once it safe for them to visit, they plan on donating food to those in nursing homes as well.
“We want to let them know that they are not left out. People do care,” owner Jackie Thomas said.
Thomas and her husband, Jimmy, are both owners at Vitality Bowls and have a son-in-law in the medical field. Because of this, the owners were even more attuned to the struggle medical workers face right now, Thomas said. The business also started giving discounts or free items to medical workers who would show up at the business, Thomas said, and the medical workers were always grateful. So when the corporation asked if anyone had ideas for how to help during COVID-19, it was an easy decision, Thomas said.
“We did the same thing after [Hurricane] Harvey. We went to the shelters where people were gathered and brought smoothies and small acai bowls,” Thomas said.
The business offered the same things to health care workers during its donations drive in April, along with an immunity boost, or a shot of lemon ginger and cayenne pepper. The business started the drive after the stay-at-home order was placed.
“Our business dropped 75%. We had people working at our store, and we started using that time to give back,” Thomas said.
Vitality Bowls, located at 1520 Bay Area Blvd., Ste. 115, Friendswood, primarily sells smoothies, smoothie bowls and other healthy items. Thomas said she hopes customers continue to support the business and healthy eating on the other side of the pandemic as well.
“We want the community to know that we are a health-conscious food provider. We want people to boost their immune systems and keep themselves at a level where healthy eating is a priority in people’s lives,” Thomas said.
