BY CULTURE MAP DALLAS – The healthy bowls rush is on, and a new concept will open in Dallas in the fall. Called Vitality Bowls, it’s a California-based company which is in heavy franchise mode: There are more than 50 Vitality Bowls restaurants across the United States, including locations in Irving, Colleyville, and Frisco, with an additional 50-plus franchise units under development.
Local entrepreneur Todd Stein will open the first café in Dallas at Preston Hollow Village in the fall, with two more locations in the works.
Stein, who previously worked in the advertising industry, says that Vitality Bowls is unlike any other fast-casual eatery option in Dallas.
“My first bite of an açaí bowl at Vitality Bowls was a game-changer,” he says.
Açaí bowls are Vitality Bowls’ specialty. They feature a thick blend of the Amazon’s antioxidant-rich berry, topped with a variety of superfoods. No fillers such as ice, frozen yogurt, added sugar, or artificial preservatives are used.
The menu features a wide variety of unique superfoods, including graviola, acerola, mangosteen, camu camu, spirulina, aronia, moringa, maca, bee pollen, and more.
Guests can choose from options such as the Green Bowl, with organic graviola, spirulina, and hemp seeds; the Dragon Bowl, with organic pitaya, coconut milk, and bananas; and the signature Vitality Bowl, with organic açaí, strawberries, and honey.
They also serve juices, smoothies, soups, panini, salads, and organic kombucha on-tap.
Vitality Bowls was founded in 2011 in San Ramon, California, by Roy and Tara Gilad, who discovered their daughter had severe food allergies and wanted to find alternatives.

BY DISCOVERING ATX – If you’re on the smoothie bowl train like I am, you have to try out the Vitality Bowls in Cedar Park. Vitality Bowls is a franchise and Cedar Park now has their very own (which is why their Instagram is @cedarparkbowls). The owner and employees are incredibly friendly and helpful. The owner was smiling, waiting for me to arrive and the employee at the register made an excellent smoothie bowl recommendation (which was good, because I was a little overwhelmed by their extensive menu). There is lots of seating and they have their WiFi code posted, so feel free to hang out.
I tried three things – a smoothie bowl, a panini, and a juice. First of all, there’s no filler. No ice or sugar is added to any of their bowls, smoothies, or juices. It’s just 100% fruit and other goodness. Vitality Bowls is unique in that their bowls focus on four main superfood bases – açaí, pitaya, acerola, graviola. Each superfood has unique qualities, depending on what health benefits you’re seeking. Currently, Vitality Bowls offers eleven different smoothie bowls, plus a breakfast oatmeal bowl and a dark chocolate dessert bowl. I tried their Nutty Bowl, which was an acai base blended with almond milk, apple juice, peanut butter, bananas, strawberries, and flax seed. It was beautifully topped with organic granola, bananas, honey, and crushed peanuts (it usually comes with almonds on top, but I asked to leave those off. They offered to do the crushed peanuts instead. How awesome!). Needless to say, I devoured it.
I have to be honest. I’ve been pretty disappointed with Cedar Park / Leander’s juice bar options… I’ve been a couple places and the combos just didn’t seem very appealing to me. Even Juiceland only has a few raw juices that I like. ENTER VITALITY BOWLS. I really liked their juices because they have a wide variety of flavor options. They have ones that highlight ginger, vitamin C, mint, and of course, the green veggies. I tried the “Detoxifier” which is lemon, raw ginger, cucumber, and coconut water. I’m a HUGE ginger fan and LOVED this juice. I could feel the healthy burn through my body (so good). If you need something between a hearty smoothie bowl and a juice, they have thirteen different smoothies for you to choose from (including a matcha smoothie). I told you, this menu is insane! I definitely came for their smoothie bowls, but I’ll for sure be back to work my way through their juice menu.
If you need something more than just juice or smoothies, Vitality Bowls also offers paninis, soups, and salads. Their paninis are as diverse as the rest of their menu, ranging from meats like turkey and sirloin, to veggie, to The Gladiator (peanut butter banana, granola, honey), to the eggnini (egg, spinach, mozzarella, pesto). Soups vary from week to week. Salads include a spinach salad with goat cheese and strawberries and a kale salad. You can also add turkey or sirloin to your salads! Salami is my favorite sandwich meat, so I was happy to see that as an option.
Final thoughts – This will be my go-to smoothie / juice place in Cedar Park from now on, especially when I need a healthy meal after work. There weren’t many people there when I was hanging out, and I couldn’t figure out why. This place should be packed! The employees were even eating here when they clocked out – that’s a good sign. If you do think you’ll become a regular, you can download their smartphone app and become a part of their rewards program.
If I’ve piqued your interest, I’d encourage you to check out THE MENU, then make your way to Cedar Park and enjoy. Thanks again Vitality Bowls in Cedar Park! I had the BEST experience and I hope you guys start seeing the business you deserve. You can for sure count on me as a weekly visitor.

BY THE VACAVILLE REPORTER – Ivan Alan had always tried to eat healthy, but he admitted he doesn’t like the taste of soy, wheatgrass or tofu.
Then he found out about Vitality Bowls, and tried one of their acai bowls at the Pleasanton mall.
“It actually tasted good, it had flavor and it was healthy,” he said.
Since getting involved with the company in 2016, he said he has lost 20 pounds and has more energy. There are still the stresses of owning multiple franchises — and building a new one in Vacaville — but Alan said he feels capable, and not weighed down.
“Now I can really eat healthy and enjoy my food as well,” he said.
Alan is planning for an Aug. 9 opening of the Vacaville cafe in the Nut Tree Plaza at the former Subway, 1631 East Monte Vista Ave., Suite 103.
This will be his second Vitality Bowls cafe. He opened his first in Berkeley in September 2017.
He is also the franchise owner of Edible Arrangements at the Nut Tree and his manager over there, Olga Dernova, will manage the new cafe.
Edible Arrangements is a healthier gift choice than regular chocolates, he pointed out, and he wanted to expand.
Vitality Bowls specializes in acai bowls, which contain a thick blend of the antioxidant-rich berry, topped with a variety of “super foods.”
On the menu are a wide variety of these, including graviola, acerola, mangosteen, camu camu, spirulina, aronia, moringa, maca and bee pollen. There’s the Green Bowl with organic graviola, spirulina and hemp seeds, the Dragon Bowl with organic pitaya, coconut milk and bananas and the signature Vitality Bowl with organic açaí, strawberries and honey.
A concentrate of the super foods are combined with apple juice, almond or coconut milk, Alan elaborated, and you can toss in other foods like kale, pineapple, blueberries or raspberries before that mixture is frozen and blended into a thick base.
They top that with granola, almonds or fresh fruit, which gives it a nice balance because the bowl has crunch but also a smoothie texture, Alan said.
Fresh juices, smoothies, soups, paninis and salads are also available, and there will be a coffee bar serving espresso and drinks packed with açaí, pitaya and matcha like the Açaí Latte and the Superfood Mocha.
Organic cold brew nitrogen-poured coffee and organic kombucha will be on-tap.
The cafe is focused on not only health-conscious eating, but on people who have dietary restrictions, including lactose intolerance, allergies and diabetes.
Tara and Roy Gilad started the concept in 2011 in San Ramon after learning of their daughter’s severe food allergies, and wanting to find safe and healthy food alternatives.
There are no-sugar, no-dairy and non-GMO options, and nearly the entire menu is organic, Alan said.
In the kitchen, they make every effort to avoid cross-contamination so that an allergen does not come in contact with the order of a customer with an allergy.
Alan, who lives in Walnut Creek, said he and his family have loved coming to the Nut Tree since he took over the local Edible Arrangements franchise in 2014.
“The Nut Tree Village is amazing because it’s got the trains over there,” he said. “My kids love it.”
Berkeley may have its steady group of so-called “health nuts,” but Alan feels there are definitely people concerned with eating well in Vacaville, Dixon and Fairfield who will be drawn in.
“It’s going to be fascinating for me,” Alan said. “I think we’re going to be the first alternative here.”
The owners of Vitality Bowls are equally enthusiastic.
“Ivan is exactly the right entrepreneur to grow the brand in Vacaville,” Tara Gilad said in a press statement. “His business intellect is outstanding. We are eager to see Ivan fill the demand for a healthy fast casual café in Vacaville.”
There are currently more than 52 Vitality Bowls restaurants across the United States with more than 100 franchise units under development.
