DANVILLE, Calif. – Inc. magazine revealed that Vitality Bowls has been earned the #3899 spot on its annual Inc. 5000 list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment – its independent small businesses. This is the fourth year in a row that the brand has ranked on the list.
“We are thrilled to be featured in the Inc. 5000 list for a fourth consecutive year, especially during such an exciting time for Vitality Bowls,” said Roy Gilad, co-founder and CEO. “Over the past few years, we have been hard at work on our operational strategies, menu innovations and franchise development plans. Receiving this honor as we approach our 10-year anniversary in the fall is truly a testament to the dedication and diligence of our corporate and franchise team members.”
Not only have the companies on the 2021 Inc. 5000 been very competitive within their markets, but this year’s list also proved especially resilient and flexible given 2020’s unprecedented challenges. Among the 5,000, the average median three-year growth rate soared to 543 percent, and median revenue reached $11.1 million. Together, those companies added more than 610,000 jobs over the past three years.
The top 500 companies are featured in the September issue of Inc., which will be available on newsstands on August 20.
“The 2021 Inc. 5000 list feels like one of the most important rosters of companies ever compiled,” says Scott Omelianuk, editor-in-chief of Inc. “Building one of the fastest-growing companies in America in any year is a remarkable achievement. Building one in the crisis we’ve lived through is just plain amazing. This kind of accomplishment comes with hard work, smart pivots, great leadership, and the help of a whole lot of people.”
Over the last decade, the northern California-based Vitality Bowls has become a leader in the health food industry, selling well over six million açaí bowls since its inception. The brand celebrates its 10-year anniversary in October 2021, recognizing a successful decade for founders Tara and Roy Gilad after they first created Vitality Bowls as a result of discovering their daughter’s severe food allergies and wanting a restaurant concept with healthy, allergy-friendly food options.
Vitality Bowls has hired John Mascali as COO to lead franchisee sales and operations.
“I’m thrilled to join Vitality Bowls during such an exciting time,” Mascali said in a company press release. “The infrastructure and team already in place have created a sound foundation for the brand, which is key as we continue to grow. I look forward to helping bring the superfood movement to new communities across the country.”
Based in Vitality Bowls’ home market of Danville, California, Mascali most recently served as COO of Meridian Restaurants, which owns 136 restaurants, including Burger King, Black Bear Diner and Chili’s locations.
“John’s extensive career in restaurant operations is going to be an asset to his work with Vitality Bowls,” Roy Gilad, founder and CEO of Vitality Bowls, said in the release. “We believe he will have an important role in not only expanding our brand nationwide, but also supporting our existing franchisees.”
Roy and Tara Gilad founded Vitality Bowls in 2011 in San Ramon, California. Since franchising began in 2014, the brand has grown to more than 145 cafes open or in development.
A new chief operating officer is in place for Vitality Bowls, the pioneer superfood café franchise growing nationwide.

A California-based health food restaurant chain has already made its way to Jacksonville, but the company said it’s looking to expand in the this area over the next year.
Vitality Bowls Vice President of Operations Uriah Blum told the Business Journal Monday that the Jacksonville Beach lifestyle has been great for business. The local store is at 1516 3rd St. North.
“Jacksonville is a growing city, and the sales research team shows that business has done exceptionally well,” Blum said. “There’s definitely kind of the right type of energy (at the beach location).”
The restaurant, which features menu items like açaí bowls, salads, soups and fresh juices, opened about 10 years ago and has about 74 franchises across the country. There are expansion plans for 2022, including Jacksonville.
Blum said capital investment is usually around $350,000, and franchisees don’t need a lot of experience.
“You don’t need to have cooking (experience) with ovens and trained chefs, which makes it appealing to potential franchisees,” he said. “Although it’ll certainly help.”
As far as hiring goes, Blum said he hopes the labor shortage isn’t the new normal and that wages and prices have stayed competitive across locations.
“We have an attractive brand, and we want (our candidates) to that align with our philosophy,” he said. “They’re passionate about healthy food, and they want to come and work for a company.”
He said Vitality Bowls has been getting creative with offering hiring bonuses, incentives and growth opportunities that help employees feel valued in the workplace.
